Strong Viking beer
The story behind
Our Strong Viking concept is based on the life of the Vikings. Everything we do, we are doing with the Viking spirit in our mind. Vikings were large and active people. They had to be, given the circumstances they lived in. To survive in Scandinavia Vikings had to have a large amount of courage, endurance and self-trust. Capacities you will also need when running a Strong Viking Run!
Vikings loved to drink beer, so do we (responsible!!). After our run we drink our well-deserved beer in Walhalla. For Vikings drinking beer was also a practical consideration, they drank their beer on long journeys. Beer is a fermented drink which can be preserved for longer times. This makes it possible for Vikings to go on long expeditions overseas without having to stop to get fresh water. On top of that beer contains a good amount of calories which Vikings could really use on their journeys. Beer gives you more energy than water. Besides, Vikings could grow the barley for brewing beer on their own lands. All things together make beer the perfect drink for Vikings.
At Strong Viking we share this love for beer. From this love grew our wish to brew our own beer. Of course, this couldn’t be just an average “Pils”, it had to be a real Strong Viking beer! But what could make a beer, not just a beer, but a Strong Viking beer? This was our challenge! Together with a professional brewer we found Viking ingredients to add to the brewing process. These ingredients give the beer a unique taste and the real Viking spirit!
The first special ingredient is onion. You must wonder, onion in my beer? Why? Well, there is a story behind this onion. When Vikings were seriously injured during a battle they were given onion soup. This wasn’t because they were hungry. A few minutes after the wounded Viking ate his onion soup another person would smell the wound. If the wound smells like onion, it’s bad news. This means there were some serious internal bleedings and death was inevitable. When there was no onion smell at the wound, the chances of survival were higher. The Viking would get medicinal herbs. Thanks to the onion soup these rare medicinal herbs could be saved in cases they would not have helped anyway. This story leads to the first ingredient of our Strong Viking beer: onion. Don’t worry, the beer does not taste like strong onion soup. The onion only gives the beer a light sweet taste
Vikings were warriors, but they also were farmers who grew different crops on their own fields. The rough Scandinavian landscape was not the easiest to farm. But they were able to grow barley. There also grew different herbs on their fields. Vikings used these to make their food more appetizing. An important one is coriander. We added this to our brewing process. Not everybody is a fan of coriander, actually it is more of a you hate it or you love it situation. You don’t like coriander? No worries! The coriander doesn’t make the beer taste like soap. It only gives off a peppery and fresh taste. Even if you do not like it, you can’t resist a Strong Viking beer!
So, Vikings loved their beer, but they also drank honey wine, also called mead. The main ingredient of this wine is honey. In Norse mythology there are different stories going around about mead. There is a story about Vikings mixing honey with the blood of the wise Kvasir. There is not a question in the world he can’t answer. People who drink mead with the blood of Kvasir are believed to become very wise. Since adding blood to our beer didn’t really seem like a good idea we decided to add honey which was another of the Viking’s main export products.
