Protein bars, a smart snack after your Strong Viking performance
As a Viking, do you put extra protein on the menu? At what time should you do so? And how do you determine your required serving of protein? Questions we often hear at Herbalife Nutrition. We can be brief: if you want to keep your steel cables, as a Viking should, it is best to take a well-balanced snack after your run or your workout.
Dana Ryan, PhD, MBA, M.A. - Director, Sport Performance and Education at Herbalife Nutrition says, "Healthy snacking is an important part of everyone's diet. But for Vikings and active people, the right snacks provide more than that - sufficient fuel for training, improve muscle recovery, boost mental performance and help maintain a fit body. It is therefore important to choose the right composition of nutrients and proteins are very important in this regard."
Like fats and carbohydrates, our bodies need protein. These essential nutrients can be found in many products of both animal and plant origin - think eggs, chicken, dairy, pasta, nuts, seeds or legumes.
Muscle recovery
How much protein you need depends on your body weight and lifestyle. For non-athletes, 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is an adequate amount. If you exercise regularly, you can eat up to 2 grams per kilogram of body weight. It is best to spread this dose over several meals a day. Per hour your body can process about 25 grams of protein. Dana Ryan: "Aim for at least 20 grams of protein in your snack to prevent muscle breakdown and promote muscle building. Eating protein within the first hour of exercise is ideal for replenishing and building muscle. So take your serving of protein right after you cross the finish line, during the 'recovery' phase."
When you're on the go, opt for a convenient snack like a protein bar, Greek yogurt or nuts. Snacks are a great way to get the extra nutrition you need to achieve your goals and desired performance.
